EMPower Breastfeeding is a hospital-based quality improvement initiative focusing on maternity practices leading to Baby-Friendly designation. The initiative is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO). DNPAO is committed to increasing breastfeeding rates throughout the United States and to promoting and supporting optimal breastfeeding practices toward the ultimate goal of improving the public’s health. DNPAO supports evidence-based practices for prenatal and maternity settings known as the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding (Ten Steps) and the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), an effort to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that complete the Ten Steps. The EMPower team works with guidance from Baby-Friendly USA (BFUSA) and in partnership with Lactation Education Resources (LER).
Abt Associates is a mission-driven, global leader in research and program implementation in the fields of health, social and environmental policy, and international development. Abt Associates leads the EMPower initiative and serves as a partner with CGBI and CPHQ, with guidance from BFUSA.
The Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute (CGBI) is the first Public Breastfeeding Center of its kind. CGBI seeks to promote increased quality of care and create an optimal breastfeeding norm. CGBI staff members have experience providing technical assistance around the Ten Steps and serves as breastfeeding experts for the EMPower initiative.
Population Health Improvement Partners (formerly known as the Center for Public Health Quality) helps health-focused organizations and coalitions build organizational and community capacity to improve and sustain population health. Improvement Partners staff are trained in various quality improvement (QI) methodologies and many also have extensive clinical and hospital experience. Improvement Partners serves as hospital QI experts for the EMPower initiative.
The EMPower Breastfeeding coaches represent a diverse team of 12 breastfeeding and QI experts with extensive past experience working with hospitals to achieve change. All coaches have been cross-trained and are knowledgeable on both breastfeeding practice and QI methods. Find out more about our coaches here.
